Nothing Too Taboo
Galatians 5:19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
My question for Christian parents, as well as every Christian mentor out there, is why do we shy away from teaching the tough topics? The topics of sex, drugs, alcohol, lust, etc. These issues are considered too taboo to talk about much too often.
Most churches never even mention these topics in a voice above a whisper and when they do it sounds like the Bobby’s mom from the movie Waterboy…“it is the Devil!” The issue is never really covered on any level other than that. We hope and pray that the youth rely on the “Just Say No” campaigns.
I am living proof campaigns such as those do not work. I actually grew up in church and heard all the demands and preaching to not drink and everything else. Then I never saw these teachings backed up with actions. All the people in my life would tell stories of drinking or hooking up with girls. I figured this advice was just like the speed limit signs on the road…no one follows them either.
The truth is my parents were great people and I am in no way bashing my upbringing. However, I think my family’s perspective of church was fire insurance and not a way of life. Now, ultimately I am responsible for my actions. I used to drink almost every weekend-a lot! This led me to doing numerous stupid things that I will regret for the rest of my life.
I honestly never understood the impacts drinking would have on my life. My parents actually talked to me about drinking and driving and let me know the dangers. Guess what? I never drove drunk. Had they talked to me the same way about drinking and sex, I may have shied away from that also. Maybe they would have spoke to me on a deeper level about these topics if they were taught this by the spiritual leaders they trusted.
Maybe you think these topics are too taboo and will not change. Think about this,
Galatians 5:21 goes on to say “…I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” When we ignore the tough topics we are ignoring the spiritual health of the youth.
