The Giants were Subdued
Psalm 18:1-3
I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies. NKJV
This Psalm was written by King David during the latter part of his reign. He and his men went down to fight against the Philistines and the sons of Goliath; who were giants that fought in the Philistine army. The same Goliath that David killed when he was a young shepherd boy using only his sling shot and a small pebble that pierced the center of Goliath’s forehead.
King David could have easily stayed back and sent his army to fight without him but he valiantly chose to go down with them to fight alongside his men. However David was now older in age and the battle was taking a toll on his body and it said in 2 Samuel 21:15, that David grew faint or in the NIV version it said he was exhausted. One of the giants had taken notice and sought to kill him but Abishai, son of Zeruiah (David’s sister) who was also known as one of David’s, “Mighty Men” came to his rescue and David along with his men were able to defeat the Philistines and all their giants bringing another victory to the kingdom of Israel.
David wrote this Psalm on this day of victory to the Lord; Who delivered him from all of his enemies. I encourage you to read the entire psalm and this story. He gives praise and honor to the Lord for being his strength, his rock, his fortress, his horn of salvation, his shield and stronghold. He acknowledged his love for the Lord and lifted up praises to His name for the victory God had given him in the midst of his enemies.
If we look around today; anything that causes us to feel intimidated, defeated, or fearful can be viewed as a modern day GIANT. It can cause us to feel discouraged or like David exhausted by the battle.
Are you facing any giants in your life today? Are they causing you to feel defeated, tired or weary?
If so, I want to encourage you that no matter how large our giant may seem we can turn to God as David did to be our strength, our rock, our fortress, horn of salvation, shield and our strong tower. We can trust in Him to give us victory and deliver us from our enemies because God is greater and He is the one Who fights our battles.
“O Lord, my strength and my fortress, My refuge in the day of affliction” Jeremiah16:19 - NKJV
“My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 - NKJV
“Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:30-31 - NKJV
“From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a shelter for me, A strong tower from the enemy.” Psalm 61:2-3 - NKJV
